Excerpt from Chapter 3 on Alkalinity

In our home, we saw firsthand the importance of alkalinity in a body. This story is of Nicodemus, the iguana of one of our twins, Aaron. Nicodemus was about a foot long, and the most beautiful sea green color you can imagine. Arron and all the other kids played with him all the time. We all looked forward to the time he’d get huge and climb all over the place.

Aaron had had Nicodemus for more than a year when he noticed that the iguana wasn’t proudly propping himself up on his front legs. He just squatted weirdly on his belly with his feet splayed out to the sides. Utterly distressed, my thirteen-year-old shelled out fifty dollars and we took Nicodemus to a veterinarian.

The vet asked, “What’s he been eating?”  “Vegetables,” Aaron answered. “Mostly head lettuce.” “Ah, Green Death,” said the vet. Alarmed, I asked, “Why do you call it that?” He replied, “Although lettuce can be part of his diet, there is not enough calcium in head lettuce. His body has been leaching calcium from his bones in order to live.” That’s the day we found out that keeping blood at a proper pH trumps the health and integrity of bones.

Nicodemus died the next day. Although we, as larger beings, probably won’t die, we know that people do get osteopenia and osteoporosis for the same reasons: the blood system MUST stay at a certain pH, and so calcium is taken from our bones to buffer the blood. I have learned from Nicodemus’s experience, and so can all of us!

Scott's Choice Book

The day after Scott died, an energy worker told me, “About an hour before he died, I saw Scott’s spirit standing by his body. He was peaceful, radiant, and glowing. He smiled at me and confidently said, “I’m going to go.” Her statement electrified me! She didn’t know, but her telling me what he said completed something God’s Spirit had told me at the very beginning of this journey: “Scott will make a choice; once chosen, it will be irrevocable.” I was sad to lose him but thrilled for his decision—Scott had made his own choice!”

My 51-year-old husband had me take him to the emergency room early one morning to obtain something for his pain. Instead, the doctor came back from taking a CT scan and said, “There’s something on your liver that shouldn’t be there.” This began our quest to find out what this thing was and to excise it. That same week i was talking to my daughter-in-law on the phone and two phrases popped unbidden into my mind with a sort of flicker that felt like a deja vu:  “Scott will make a choice; once chosen, it will be irrevocable.” Those words from God’s Spirit, in addition to what Scott asked of me, helped to define our different roles in this venture—mine was to research choices of treatment and his was to choose and, hopefully in the choosing, to get better!  (To read more about Elaine and Scott’s journey, you can find Scott’s Choice: Letting Go and Letting God on Amazon).
